HSHS Medical Group’s newest Ask an Expert episode features Nitin Kumar, MD, a gastroenterologist at HSHS Medical Group Gastroenterology in Effingham. According to Dr. Kumar, “With colorectal cancer early detection is your best protection.”
According to the American Cancer Society, excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. Estimates for the number of colorectal cancer cases in the United States for 2017 are 95,520 new cases of colon cancer and 39,910 new cases of rectal cancer. “Most colorectal cancers develop from colorectal polyps,” said Kumar. “These are abnormal growths that can become larger and more abnormal over time, eventually becoming cancerous and spreading throughout the body.”
Dr. Kumar says that most cases can be prevented by a colorectal cancer screening, which is checking for cancer before there are any symptoms and removing polyps before they can grow into colorectal cancer. “About one in three people are not getting screened as recommended. If they did, about 30,000 lives would be saved each year. About the same number of people killed in car accidents.”
